We design the space for the sound

[EN] Western society divides everything and thus deludes itself into thinking it has greater control over life. It specializes in one part of the whole, as if that part were independent of the rest of the world and of life itself. I can take a watch apart, but if I don’t understand the relationship between the various gears, I won’t be able to put it back together. And a watch that’s been taken apart is no longer a watch.

In the same way, acoustics is a service to architecture, which is a service to humanity. And service to humanity means an action that seeks the good of humanity. Acoustics is one part, but it must be connected to the rest.

The designed environment can be a useful refuge to prepare for life’s struggles. Therefore, it must be able to provide, or maybe propose, the right kind of tranquillity.

Visual elements (shapes, their proportions, colors, materials) play a fundamental role in the perception and creation of sound. Everything is so interconnected…

It is the duty of architecture as a whole to ensure that the five senses (or six?) work in such a way that the final effect is greater than the sum of its parts.

Furthermore: every client has his own unique world that must be studied and embraced, so that the project is like a tailor-made garment… it is a tailor’s process, where daily routines and the constant pursuit of beauty and the unexpected work together to bring forth something new that did not exist before.

A few years ago, I was working with an artist. We were in the studio when he turned to me and said, “Do you realize that songs that don’t even exist yet are going to be born here?”

[IT] La società occidentale divide tutto e si illude così di avere un controllo maggiore sulla vita. Si specializza in una parte del tutto, come se quella cosa fosse indipendente dal resto del mondo e della vita stessa. Smonto un orologio, ma se non conosco la relazione tra i vari ingranaggi, non so più rimontarlo. E un orologio smontato non è un orologio.

Allo stesso modo l’acustica è un servizio all’architettura, la quale è un servizio all’uomo. E servizio all’uomo significa un’azione che ricerca il bene per l’uomo. La materia acustica è una parte, ma deve essere collegata con il resto.

L’ambiente progettato può essere un rifugio utile per prepararsi alla lotta nella vita. Quindi deve poter permettere, o forse proporre, la giusta calma.

Gli elementi visivi (le forme, le loro proporzioni, i colori, i materiali) giocano un ruolo fondamentale nella percezione e nella creazione del suono. E’ tutto così collegato…

E’ dovere dell’architettura tutta fare in modo che i cinque sensi (o sei?) lavorino in modo tale che l’effetto finale sia maggiore della somma degli elementi.

Inoltre: ogni cliente ha un suo mondo che va studiato e accolto in modo tale che il progetto sia come un abito fatto su misura… si tratta di una attività sartoriale, dove le routine quotidiane e la costante ricerca del bello e dell’inaspettato lavorano perché la cosa nuova, che non c’era, appaia.

Alcuni anni fa stavo lavorando con un artista. Eravamo in studio, lui si gira e mi dice: “Ti rendi conto che qui nasceranno canzoni che ancora non esistono?”

…Fare un progetto che permetta la nascita di nuovi progetti.
